Capcom Uses AI to Generate Vast In-Game Environment Ideas

by Skylar May 14,2025

In the evolving landscape of video game development, Capcom is exploring the use of generative AI to streamline the creation of in-game environments. As development costs continue to escalate, game publishers are increasingly turning to AI technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce expenses. For instance, Call of Duty reportedly introduced an "AI-generated cosmetic" for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in late 2023, and there have been allegations against Activision for using generative AI in loading screens. Meanwhile, EA has publicly stated that AI is at "the very core" of its operations.

In a recent interview with Google Cloud Japan, Kazuki Abe, a technical director at Capcom who has contributed to major titles such as Monster Hunter: World and Exoprimal, discussed Capcom's approach to integrating AI into their development processes. Abe highlighted that one of the most labor-intensive aspects of game development is generating the "hundreds of thousands" of unique ideas required for various in-game objects. He pointed out that even items like televisions need distinct designs, logos, and shapes. "Including unused ones, we ended up having to come up with hundreds of thousands of ideas," Abe stated (via Automaton).

To address this challenge, Abe developed a system that leverages generative AI to read game design documents and produce creative proposals. Each proposal includes illustrations and text to effectively communicate the concept to art directors and artists. This AI-driven approach not only speeds up the development process but also allows for self-feedback, which helps refine the output further.

Abe's prototype utilizes multiple AI models, including Google Gemini Pro, Gemini Flash, and Imagen, and has received positive feedback from internal development teams at Capcom. The implementation of this AI model is expected to "reduce costs significantly" compared to traditional manual methods, while also enhancing the quality of the output.

Currently, Capcom's use of AI is confined to this specific system. Other crucial areas of game development, such as ideation, gameplay mechanics, programming, and character design, remain under the stewardship of human developers, ensuring a balanced approach to innovation and creativity in game production.
