Doom: The Dark Ages Unveils New Gameplay Details

by Simon Apr 19,2025

In a recent interview with EDGE magazine, the developers behind Doom: The Dark Ages unveiled exciting new details about the game's gameplay. This installment places a strong emphasis on storytelling, with levels designed to be the largest in the series' history, offering players a sandbox-like experience that combines the thrill of dungeon crawling with expansive open-world exploration.

Game director Hugo Martin and studio head Marty Stratton highlighted several key aspects during the discussion. Unlike previous Doom titles where much of the backstory was tucked away in text logs, Doom: The Dark Ages will embrace a more direct narrative approach. The game will immerse players in a medieval atmosphere, toning down futuristic elements. Even the iconic weapons will undergo a design transformation to seamlessly blend with the new setting.

Doom: The Dark Ages will maintain the series' tradition of distinct levels, but these will be the most expansive yet. The chapters are structured into "acts," beginning with tight, claustrophobic dungeons before opening up into vast landscapes. Players will have the thrilling opportunity to control both a dragon and a mech, introducing a dynamic shift in gameplay.

A standout addition to the Slayer’s arsenal is a versatile shield that also functions as a chainsaw. This innovative shield can be hurled at enemies, reacting uniquely based on the material it strikes—whether it be flesh, armor, energy shields, or other surfaces. The shield also facilitates a dash attack, enabling rapid movement across the battlefield. With the absence of double jumps and roars from previous games, this new mechanic becomes essential for mobility. Moreover, the shield introduces a parrying system, complete with adjustable difficulty settings and precise timing windows.

Parrying in Doom: The Dark Ages serves as a "reload" mechanism for melee attacks, while engaging in melee combat replenishes ammunition for primary weapons, echoing the chainsaw mechanic seen in DOOM Eternal. Players will have access to a range of melee options, including a swift gauntlet, a balanced shield, and a powerful, slower mace.
