Sucker Punch's upcoming title, Ghost of Yotei, promises to be the studio's most expansive and liberating game to date. Dive into the details of what this sequel to the acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima has in store, and how it authentically portrays Japanese culture.
In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch unveiled exciting new features for Ghost of Yotei. This standalone sequel builds on the success of Ghost of Tsushima by offering enhanced gameplay and a deeper narrative. Creative Director Jason Cornell highlighted that the game will boast unprecedented freedom in gameplay and the largest maps Sucker Punch has ever crafted. Players will have the autonomy to locate and confront the Yotei Six at their own pace, eschewing linear progression for a more open-ended experience.
The game's PS5 release date was announced last week, accompanied by a trailer titled "The Onryō’s List." This trailer provided glimpses into the storyline and gameplay, introducing protagonist Atsu and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six.
Exploration isn't the only aspect where players will find more freedom; weapon choice has also been expanded. Speculation arose from the latest trailer, suggesting a broader arsenal for Atsu. Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed this, revealing that in addition to the traditional samurai sword, players can wield an odachi (Japanese long sword), a chain sickle, double swords, and a spear.
Fox stressed that while the sword remains a central element, other weapons can be mastered through interactions with various teachers and masters encountered throughout the story and open world. Unlike its predecessor, where the samurai's honor was a focal point, Atsu's character does not adhere to these traditional constraints. Her combat style is versatile, allowing her to utilize any weapon she finds on the battlefield, such as picking up and throwing an enemy's dropped weapon.
Ghost of Yotei is set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (present-day Hokkaido). According to Cornell, the setting strikes a balance between a lawless environment and the natural beauty that harbors hidden dangers. The game will also feature the Ainu culture, an indigenous group native to Japan's northern regions. To authentically represent this culture, Sucker Punch conducted extensive research, visiting Hokkaido and engaging with experts and museums dedicated to Ainu heritage.
Cornell was inspired by Hokkaido's stunning landscapes, motivating the team to recreate this setting for players worldwide. Following the critical acclaim Ghost of Tsushima received for its depiction of Japanese culture, Ghost of Yotei aims to maintain this high standard by showcasing the "dangers lurking in the magnificent wilderness of Ezo."
Ghost of Yōtei is set to launch on October 2, 2025, exclusively on the PlayStation 5. Stay tuned for more updates and detailed information on this highly anticipated game.
