We recently had the exciting opportunity to visit Osaka, Japan, where we sat down for an in-depth two-hour interview with the key developers behind the much-anticipated sequel to Okami. We spoke with Clover Studio's director Hideki Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata to delve into their vision, the project's origins, and what fans can expect from the new game.
Our interview was a fantastic experience, and we believe you'll enjoy it just as much, whether you choose to watch or read the full version available here. For those interested in the key takeaways, we've summarized the most significant points for Okami enthusiasts below:
One of the most exciting revelations from our interview is that the Okami sequel will be crafted using Capcom's powerful RE Engine. As detailed in our extended article, this choice was made to bring to life elements of the original Okami that were previously unattainable due to technological limitations. However, not all at Clover Studio are familiar with RE Engine, which is where their partner, Machine Head Works, steps in to bridge the gap.
Rumors have circulated about talent departing from PlatinumGames, including those close to Hideki Kamiya and contributors to the original Okami. During our discussion, Kamiya hinted at the involvement of some former Platinum and Capcom developers in the sequel through Machine Head Works, though specifics were not disclosed. We're eager to see who these talented individuals are.
For a more comprehensive understanding, check out our detailed article. In brief, despite the initial underwhelming sales of Okami, Capcom noticed a surge in popularity with each subsequent platform release. Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi explained that the company had been considering a sequel for some time but needed the right team in place. With Kamiya and Machine Head Works on board, the project has finally come together.
With the announcement of an "Okami sequel," there was some uncertainty about its nature. However, both Hirabayashi and Kamiya confirmed that this is indeed a direct continuation of the original game, picking up right where Okami left off. We won't reveal any spoilers here, but rest assured, the original game's ending leaves plenty of room for further storytelling.
The beloved protagonist, Amaterasu, makes a triumphant return in the teaser trailer.
Regarding Okamiden, the Nintendo DS follow-up to Okami, Capcom acknowledges its existence and the mixed reception it received. Hirabayashi noted that while there are fans of the game, feedback indicated some dissatisfaction with its story direction. The new sequel, however, will directly follow the narrative of the original Okami.

It's no secret that Hideki Kamiya is active on social media, and he confirmed in our interview that he pays attention to fans' expectations for the sequel. However, he emphasized that their goal is not to create a game that simply meets fan demands but to deliver an enjoyable experience that aligns with their vision. "Our work is not to create the exact copy of what people want from us," Kamiya stated, "but to achieve the fun that people are expecting of this Okami sequel."
Rei Kondoh, known for his work on games like Bayonetta and Dragon's Dogma, composed the original Okami's iconic final boss theme, "Rising Sun." He has now confirmed his involvement in the sequel, having arranged "Rising Sun" for the trailer showcased at The Game Awards, suggesting his return to craft the new game's soundtrack.
The developers announced the sequel early due to their enthusiasm, but they've asked fans to remain patient. Hirabayashi emphasized that quality would not be sacrificed for speed. Both he and Sakata indicated that it might be some time before more details are shared, reassuring fans that the team is deeply committed to creating a sequel that meets everyone's expectations.
