Space Marine 2's Epic Games Integration Sparks Player Backlash

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's PC launch has encountered unexpected resistance from fans over its requirement for Epic Online Services (EOS). Here's what developers have said about the controversy and the resulting community response.

Space Marine 2 Demands EOS for Crossplay Functionality

Epic Confirms Mandatory Integration

Controversy Surrounds Space Marine 2's Online Requirements

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has sparked debate since release regarding its compulsory use of Epic Online Services. Despite Focus Entertainment's earlier clarification that linking Steam and Epic accounts isn't necessary to play, Epic Games revealed to Eurogamer that crossplay between PC platforms is mandatory for multiplayer titles on their store.

Epic Explains Crossplay Policy

An Epic Games representative told Eurogamer: "Crossplay across all PC storefronts is required for multiplayer games on Epic Games Store, enabling players to connect regardless of purchase platform. Developers may choose any solution meeting this requirement, including Epic Online Services which sometimes needs separate installation for social features."

The core issue remains: While EOS isn't obligatory, it becomes the practical choice for developers needing crossplay functionality while distributing through Epic's store. The system provides ready-made solutions that comply with Epic's specifications and comes at no additional cost.

Community Reacts to EOS Requirement

Players Voice Concerns Over EOS

While some players appreciate crossplay capabilities, others strongly oppose the forced EOS installation. Concerns range from privacy worries about perceived "spyware" to general discomfort with Epic's ecosystem. This dissatisfaction led to Steam review bombing at launch, with most negative feedback focusing on the surprise EOS requirement.

The lengthy EULA accompanying EOS has exacerbated privacy concerns, particularly around data collection policies that vary by region. However, Space Marine 2 isn't unique in utilizing EOS - nearly a thousand games including major titles like Elden Ring and Palworld employ the service. Since Epic's Unreal Engine often integrates EOS by default, its widespread industry adoption isn't surprising.

EOS Removal Impacts Game Functionality

Players retain the option to remove EOS, though this eliminates crossplay functionality with non-Steam players. Despite the controversy, Space Marine 2 continues receiving critical acclaim, including our 92/100 score praising its authentic Warhammer 40K experience and improvements over its 2011 predecessor.
