The God of War series has been a cornerstone of PlayStation gaming since its debut in 2005, evolving through four generations of consoles. Kratos, the vengeful protagonist, began his journey as a deity destroyer in Ancient Greece, but few could have predicted his transformation over the next two decades. While many long-running franchises struggle to remain relevant, God of War's success can be attributed to its continuous reinvention. The most notable shift was the 2018 reboot, which transplanted Kratos into the realm of Norse mythology, significantly altering the series' presentation and gameplay. Yet, even before this acclaimed reboot, Sony Santa Monica had been making smaller, yet significant, changes to keep the series fresh.
To ensure God of War's continued success, reinvention remains crucial. When transitioning to the Norse setting, director Cory Barlog expressed interest in exploring other mythologies like the Egyptian and Mayan eras. Recent rumors have reignited speculation about an Egyptian setting, fueled by the allure of its rich mythology and distinct culture. However, a new setting alone is not enough; future installments must reinvent the series in the same transformative way as the shift from the Greek trilogy to the Norse saga.
The series has consistently embraced change from game to game. The original Greek trilogy, spanning a decade, refined its hack-and-slash mechanics, culminating in the polished gameplay of God of War 3 on the PlayStation 3. This final installment introduced a revamped magic system that complemented the melee combat and offered a broader range of enemies. The transition to the PS3 allowed for enhanced graphics and new camera angles, showcasing the game's visual prowess.
The 2018 reboot, however, saw significant departures from the original games. The Greek trilogy featured extensive platforming and puzzle elements, which were largely absent in the Norse games due to the shift to a third-person, over-the-shoulder camera. While puzzles remained, they were redesigned to fit the new adventure-focused narrative.
The Valhalla DLC for God of War Ragnarök marked a poetic return to the series' roots. It reintroduced battle arenas, a feature cherished in the original series, adapting them to the Norse setting. This mechanical return was mirrored by the story, where Kratos confronted his past in Valhalla, invited by the Norse god Týr. This full-circle journey highlighted the series' ability to weave past and present seamlessly.
The Norse era of God of War brought more than just reinterpretations. It introduced innovative mechanics like the Leviathan Axe's unique throwing capabilities, a combat-defining parry system with various shield types, and the magical spear in Ragnarök, which added a faster, explosive attack style. These elements enriched the exploration of the Nine Realms, each with its own unique enemies and aesthetics.
While combat and exploration mechanics are evident changes, the narrative evolution from the Greek to the Norse games is profound. The Norse duology explores Kratos' grief for his late wife and his complex relationship with his son, Atreus, delving into emotional depths not seen in the more straightforward storytelling of the Greek trilogy. This shift to a more emotive narrative is likely a key factor in the Norse era's critical and commercial success.
God of War's transformation in both mechanics and storytelling reflects a fresh approach to franchise development. The creators view the Norse games not as traditional sequels, but as extensions of Kratos' journey—a perspective that should guide future installments.
The experience of Assassin’s Creed offers a contrasting example of reinvention. While consistently profitable, the series has struggled to maintain fan loyalty across generations. The shift to an open-world RPG with Assassin’s Creed Origins diluted the series' connection to its foundational assassin lore. Subsequent games have faced criticism for content bloat and a drift from the stealth-focused roots toward more action-oriented power fantasies. Recent efforts like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and the upcoming Shadows aim to reconnect with the series' original gameplay and narrative focus.
The mixed reception to Assassin’s Creed's changes underscores the importance of maintaining core elements while evolving. God of War has adeptly balanced radical reinvention with preserving what made Kratos and the series compelling. The Norse games built upon the fiery combat of the Greek trilogy, adding new features like Spartan Rage, diverse weapons, and varied combat options, all while deepening the lore and maintaining a strong narrative identity.
Whether the rumors of an Egyptian setting materialize, future God of War games must continue to evolve while preserving the series' successful elements. The 2018 reboot focused on maintaining the high standard of combat from the Greek trilogy. The next installment, however, will likely be judged on its storytelling, the cornerstone of the Norse duology's success. Kratos' evolution from a rage-driven warrior to a nuanced father and leader showcases the importance of narrative depth. The next God of War must build on this strength while introducing bold new changes, aiming to set a new benchmark for the series.
