Director Andy Muschietti recently offered an update on the long-awaited film adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus. While the project has been in development for over a decade, Muschietti confirmed it's far from abandoned. The delay, he explained, stems from ongoing discussions regarding budget and the considerable popularity of the source material. Sony Pictures initially announced the live-action adaptation in 2009, with the game's creator, Fumito Ueda, involved in production. Josh Trank was initially attached to direct but withdrew due to scheduling conflicts.
This adaptation announcement comes alongside several other Sony game adaptations revealed at CES 2025, including a Helldivers movie, a Horizon Zero Dawn film, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project.
Muschietti, known for his work on It and The Flash, emphasized that the Shadow of the Colossus film is not stalled, stating that factors beyond creative desires, such as the IP's popularity, influence the process. He specifically mentioned ongoing budget negotiations and the existence of multiple script versions, with one currently favored.
The Shadow of the Colossus game's impact is undeniable; its unique atmosphere and colossal enemies have influenced subsequent titles, including Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2. Muschietti, while not a self-described "big gamer," recognizes the game's artistry, calling it a "masterpiece" and confirming multiple playthroughs. The director's passion for the project, coupled with Ueda's continued success (including the recent announcement of a new sci-fi game from his studio, GenDesign), bodes well for a faithful and compelling adaptation. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, the enduring legacy of Shadow of the Colossus is poised to extend to the big screen, potentially captivating both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
