At a recent conference in England, former Larian Studios writer Baudelaire Welch shed light on the bear romance scene in Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3), which has been hailed as a defining moment in the gaming industry. This scene, featuring the character Halsin in his bear form, was described by Welch as a "watershed moment in game history." The decision to include such a scene was influenced heavily by the game's vibrant fanfiction community, showcasing an unprecedented level of responsiveness from Larian Studios to its fans.
In BG3, players can engage in a romantic storyline with Halsin, a druid who can transform into a bear, a feature originally designed for combat. However, this ability took on a romantic dimension, reflecting Halsin's struggle to maintain his human form during emotionally intense moments. This concept was not initially planned but emerged directly from fanfiction, as Welch explained in an interview with Eurogamer. "I don't think there were specific plans for him to be a love interest," Welch noted, emphasizing the pivotal role fan-created content played in shaping the game.
Welch highlighted the enduring impact of romance in fanfiction, stating, "Romance is one of the longest-tail parts of a fandom you can create. People will write about a good romance in fanfiction for years to come." This ongoing engagement through fan-created stories helps sustain the game's community long after the main narrative ends. Notably, this community has been particularly appealing to women and LGBTQIA+ players, who have significantly contributed to the buzz around BG3 since its launch.
"This scene feels like a watershed moment in game history where the fanfiction community feels like they're not a subculture but are the majority audience being catered to in a scene and in the game as a whole," Welch remarked, underscoring the scene's importance in bridging the gap between creators and fans.
Initially, the idea of Halsin transforming into a bear in a romantic context was intended as a humorous off-screen gag. However, as studio founder Swen Vincke and senior writer John Corcoran developed Halsin’s character, they chose to integrate this concept into a central aspect of his romance storyline. "The specifically turning into a bear thing was originally meant to be a gag that took place off screen in another scene that I pitched, because I didn't think that it would ever go anywhere," Welch explained. "But then Swen [Vincke] and John [Corcoran], who's writing Halsin - as they were writing more major love scenes - were like, 'Oh, let's bring this idea forward and let's escalate it and make it a main thing for this character.'"
