"Wheel of Time RPG Confirmed as Open-World, No Release Date Yet"

by Lucas May 20,2025

The recent announcement of a The Wheel of Time video game has taken the fan community by storm, igniting both excitement and skepticism across the internet. According to a report from Hollywood's own Variety, fans can look forward to a "AAA open-world role-playing game" for PC and consoles, inspired by Robert Jordan’s iconic 14-book series. With a development timeline of three years, the project is being helmed by iwot Studios’ new Montreal-based game developer under the leadership of Craig Alexander, a former executive at Warner Bros. Games. Alexander's impressive resume includes overseeing the development of renowned titles such as The Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons & Dragons Online, and Asheron's Call.

However, it's the involvement of iwot Studios that has stirred the pot of skepticism. Acquired as Red Eagle Entertainment back in 2004, iwot Studios has a contentious history with the passionate The Wheel of Time fanbase. Online searches reveal a trail of fan discontent, with accusations of iwot being an "IP camper" and criticisms of the studio for allegedly squandering the franchise's potential over the years. A notable 10-year-old Reddit post encapsulates the depth of these grievances.

Adding fuel to the fire is the ambitious claim that a newly established studio could deliver a triple-A RPG within just three years. This has led to a widespread "we'll believe it when we see it" sentiment among fans.

Despite this, The Wheel of Time has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to its Amazon Prime Video adaptation, which concluded its third season to positive reception. The series, which initially faced backlash for deviating from the source material in Seasons 1 and 2, managed to win back fans with a well-received Season 3. The show has undoubtedly brought the epic saga to a broader audience, setting the stage for potential interest in the upcoming video game.

Curious to delve deeper, I reached out to iwot Studios for more insights. In a video call with Rick Selvage, the head of iwot Studios, and Craig Alexander, the studio head overseeing the game's development, I sought to understand the project's current status, its ambitious scope, and what fans can realistically expect. I also presented the online criticisms to them for a direct response.
