Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly

by Isaac Jun 19,2025

In a recent development, Respawn Entertainment has reportedly canceled an unannounced incubation project, leading to layoffs within the team. This information initially surfaced via Insider Gaming, citing a now-deleted LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who mentioned that the project they had been working on for the past year was terminated this week, leaving several talented individuals in search of new opportunities.

IGN has independently verified the cancellation and confirmed that the now-defunct project was a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS). The game was being developed by a subgroup previously involved in Respawn’s canceled Star Wars FPS initiative from last year. At least one job posting related to this new project was listed in 2023, offering a glimpse into its early-stage development. While the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed, sources indicate the layoffs were limited in scope—described as “small” by those familiar with the situation. Additionally, at least one individual connected to the project clarified on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.

This incident aligns with a broader pattern of project cancellations, restructuring, and workforce reductions across Electronic Arts (EA) over the past year. In 2023, EA cut approximately 50 roles at BioWare and an unspecified number at Codemasters. The trend continued almost exactly one year ago when EA announced 670 company-wide layoffs and shut down multiple titles—including the previously mentioned Star Wars FPS. Around two dozen members of Respawn’s team were impacted during that round of cuts. Since then, EA has pursued internal restructuring at BioWare, shifting developers to other projects while also letting go of an unknown number of key personnel.

IGN has contacted Electronic Arts for official comment regarding the most recent developments.
