Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster's script has been modified to accommodate voice acting. Discover the developer's rationale for these changes and why players will experience two distinct versions of the game.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles features an entirely reworked script to support voice implementation. Original writer Yasumi Matsuno confirmed in a June 21 interview that while the core narrative remains unchanged, extensive dialogue modifications were made to optimize the auditory experience.
Matsuno explained the team's focus was "preserving the essence of what made the original 1997 PS1 title captivating while modernizing its presentation." The rewrites prioritized natural vocal delivery while maintaining the game's signature tone and character portrayals.
The veteran developer humorously acknowledged his evolving perspective: "You might notice slight phrasing differences reflecting thirty years of writing experience - though whether that means improvement or just aging perceptions remains debatable!"
The remaster offers two distinct experiences: a Classic version faithfully recreating the original and an Enhanced edition with quality-of-life improvements. Director Kazutoyo Maehiro explained this dual-version approach during a June 22 developer interview, addressing why the team avoided an HD-2D overhaul like other Square Enix remakes.
Maehiro emphasized their goal: "Introducing Tactics to modern players required careful consideration - we couldn't simply re-release the 1997 experience unchanged." The development essentially created two games simultaneously, requiring significant resources to honor the original while crafting the Enhanced version for contemporary audiences.
Art Director Hiroshi Minagawa detailed their graphical philosophy, noting they preserved the original aesthetic after evaluating potential 3D conversions. "We rediscovered brilliant design solutions within the original's technical constraints," he explained. While employing HD-2D techniques, the visual approach differs from contemporaries like OCTOPATH TRAVELER due to unique sprite composition and color treatments.
After nearly thirty years, Final Fantasy Tactics returns with this balanced approach - honoring its devoted fans while introducing new players to Ivalice's storied conflicts.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles launches September 30, 2025 across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms. Stay informed about development updates through our continuing coverage.
