The developers and publishers behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have firmly stated that they are not aiming to transform the game into a "full live service" model, following a backlash from the community regarding events perceived to promote "FOMO" (Fear Of Missing Out). FOMO is a strategy commonly employed by live service game developers to spur quick engagement and spending on limited-time virtual items, creating a sense of urgency among players to obtain these items before they disappear.
This approach has been criticized for fostering an unhealthy dynamic between games and their communities. A 2021 study commissioned by the UK's GambleAware charity highlighted how many games use psychological tactics, such as the fear of missing out on limited-time offers, to encourage purchases of loot boxes. Although Space Marine 2 does not include loot boxes, its recent introduction of community events aimed at unlocking exclusive cosmetics sparked similar concerns among players, leading to the "live service" label being applied to the game.
In response to the community's feedback, Space Marine 2's publisher, Focus Entertainment, and developer, Saber Interactive, acknowledged the negative reception to these events. They admitted that many players felt the events induced FOMO. However, they reassured the community that items introduced through these events would be made available again in the future, ensuring everyone gets a chance to acquire them. Their statement emphasized that the purpose of community events is to allow the most dedicated players to unlock items early, not to cause frustration or stress.
The companies also apologized for the cumbersome process of unlocking these items and promised to simplify the experience. To demonstrate their commitment to the community, Focus Entertainment is offering the coveted emblem-less Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account to Space Marine 2. This helmet, part of the Imperial Vigil community event ending on March 3, was previously exclusive to those who achieved a victory with each of six classes in Operations Mode by the deadline.
As players eagerly await the upcoming 7.0 update for Space Marine 2, which will introduce a new weapon, a new Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks, Focus and Saber have addressed ongoing concerns about content updates. They have outlined what players can expect in the coming months. Space Marine 2, which enjoyed a record-breaking launch last year, has sold 5 million copies, making it the fastest-selling Warhammer video game ever.
