SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Companies: A Fight for AI Protections and Fair Compensation

SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, has initiated a strike against major video game companies, including Activision and Electronic Arts, effective July 26th. This action, following protracted negotiations, centers on concerns about the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) and fair compensation for performers.

Key Issues: The AI Debate

The core dispute revolves around the burgeoning use of AI in video game production. While not inherently opposed to AI technology, SAG-AFTRA members are apprehensive about its potential to replace human actors. Specific concerns include:

  • Unauthorized use of likeness and voice: The fear of AI replicating actors' voices or creating digital likenesses without their consent or compensation.
  • Displacement of actors: The possibility that AI could take over smaller roles, hindering career progression for aspiring actors.
  • Ethical concerns: The potential for AI-generated content to contradict an actor's personal values.

Temporary Solutions and New Agreements

To address these issues and facilitate some continued work, SAG-AFTRA has implemented several agreements:

  • Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA): This framework establishes four tiers based on a game's budget, providing adjusted rates and terms for projects ranging from $250,000 to $30 million. This agreement, established in February, includes AI protections previously rejected by the video game industry bargaining group.

  • Interim Interactive Media Agreement/Interim Interactive Localization Agreement: This agreement offers temporary solutions covering various aspects of compensation, AI usage, working conditions, and benefits. Projects approved under this agreement are exempt from the strike.

Negotiation Timeline and Union Resolve

Negotiations commenced in October 2022. A strong 98.32% vote in favor of strike authorization on September 24, 2023, underscores the union's determination. Despite progress on some points, the lack of robust AI protections remains the primary obstacle. SAG-AFTRA leadership has emphasized the industry's substantial profits and the crucial role of its members, vowing to fight for fair treatment and AI safeguards.
