Bethesda Fans Speculate on Next Remaster After Oblivion Success

Following the positive reception of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, conversations have shifted to which Bethesda classic might receive similar treatment next. With strong rumors pointing to Fallout 3 (whose remaster was reportedly leaked in 2023), many wonder how the studio could enhance this iconic 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG.

Modernizing Classic Mechanics

Bruce Nesmith, a lead designer on Fallout 3, has openly acknowledged the game's lackluster gunplay that he believes would see major improvements in a potential remaster.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested Fallout 3 Remastered would likely adopt Fallout 4's refined shooting mechanics:

"Fallout 4's combat improvements highlight exactly what needed changing from Fallout 3. The original marked Bethesda's first attempt at shooter mechanics - they did remarkable work evolving these systems by Fallout 4."

Learning From Oblivion's Remaster

The Oblivion remaster, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, sets an impressive precedent. Beyond expected 4K/60FPS performance, it delivers comprehensive upgrades including:

Completely revamped leveling systems
Modernized character creation
Enhanced combat animations
Redesigned UI interfaces

Additional improvements feature expanded dialogue options, improved third-person perspectives, and advanced lip-sync technology. The extensive changes have led some fans to argue it approaches remake territory - though Bethesda has clarified its remaster philosophy.

Nesmith believes Fallout 3 would benefit from similar attention: "Oblivion wasn't simply updated to Skyrim's 2011 standards - it achieved something potentially surpassing even Skyrim's latest enhancements. What we're seeing could be called 'Oblivion 2.0.'"
