The possibility of Overwatch coming to mobile seemed unlikely, especially after reports suggested Blizzard shelved such plans. However, a new collaboration between Nexon and Blizzard could revive this prospect.
While the agreement primarily involves Nexon obtaining publishing and development rights for future StarCraft RTS titles—beating competitors like Krafton and Netmarble—the more intriguing revelation involves Overwatch.
Reports indicate the deal may include rights for an Overwatch mobile game, suggesting the project isn't abandoned. More surprisingly, this could manifest as an official mobile MOBA spin-off rather than a direct port.
Overwatch isn't new to the MOBA genre, having had representation in Heroes of the Storm. This could potentially be a mobile adaptation of HotS with an Overwatch focus, though a completely new spin-off remains equally plausible.
However, expectations for an "Overwatch 3" should be tempered—this would mark a significant departure for the traditionally PC/console franchise. Yet, embracing MOBA elements could help Overwatch stay relevant against rising competitors like Marvel Rivals.
With Nexon now in the picture, Blizzard may be preparing bold moves to reinvigorate the Overwatch franchise through mobile and strategic genre expansion.
