Doom's Enduring Legacy: A PDF Port and Beyond

A high school student's remarkable feat of porting the iconic 1993 game, Doom, to a PDF file underscores the game's enduring appeal and the boundless creativity of its fanbase. While offering a playable, albeit slow, experience, this achievement adds another extraordinary entry to the long list of unconventional platforms where Doom has been successfully executed.

Doom's compact size (a mere 2.39 megabytes) is a key factor enabling such ports. Its influence on the first-person shooter (FPS) genre is undeniable; the game's very existence essentially defined the FPS category, with many early titles often dubbed "Doom clones." This legacy continues to inspire programmers and gaming enthusiasts to push boundaries, resulting in Doom's appearance on devices ranging from refrigerators and alarm clocks to car stereos – a testament to both the game's enduring popularity and the ingenuity of its community.

GitHub user ading2210, the high school student behind the PDF port, cleverly leveraged the PDF format's JavaScript capabilities for 3D rendering and other functionalities. However, the limitations of the format necessitated compromises. The resulting game, as shown in the creator's video, is monochrome, lacks sound and text, and suffers from an 80ms per-frame response time. This is due to the impracticality of using individual text boxes as pixels at Doom's 320x200 resolution; instead, a single text box per screen row was employed.

Recent examples of Doom's unconventional ports include a November release playable on the Nintendo Alarmo and another within the game Balandro. Both demonstrate performance limitations, mirroring the PDF version. These projects aren't solely about achieving optimal performance; they showcase the limitless potential for creative expression and the enduring relevance of Doom, even over three decades after its release. The ongoing experimentation guarantees that Doom's surprising appearances on unusual platforms will continue to captivate and amaze.
