Civilization VII's Early Access Launch Met with Negative Steam Reviews

Civilization VII (Civ 7) launched its Advanced Access five days ahead of its official February 11th release, but the early reception on Steam has been overwhelmingly negative. The game currently holds a "mostly negative" rating, primarily due to criticisms regarding its user interface (UI), map features, and resource mechanics.

The UI has drawn significant flak, with many players describing it as clunky, unattractive, and inferior to Civ 6's interface. Some comparisons have even been made to free mobile game knockoffs. Concerns have also been raised about potential console prioritization in development, leading to a perceived lack of UI options and a "barren" feel.

Map generation and customization options are also under fire. Players cite issues with map selection, limited size options (only small, medium, and large, compared to Civ 6's five sizes), and a lack of detailed information when browsing map types. The limited customization further reduces replayability, according to player feedback.

The revamped resource mechanics have also proven controversial. Instead of directly gathering resources from map tiles as in Civ 6, Civ 7 assigns resources to cities or empires through strategic management. Many players feel this change diminishes replayability compared to the random resource generation of its predecessor.

Firaxis Games has acknowledged the negative feedback, specifically addressing UI concerns and promising ongoing improvements and updates based on player input. They also indicated that future updates and expansions will address map-related issues. The overwhelmingly negative response, however, highlights significant challenges the developers face before the official release.
