Jack Wall Addresses Mass Effect 3 Absence

by Jonathan Nov 03,2025

Composer Jack Wall has revealed why he didn't return for Mass Effect 3 after creating the beloved soundtracks for the first two games in the series.

Wall collaborated with BioWare to craft the distinctive 80s-inspired sci-fi scores for 2007's Mass Effect and its 2010 sequel. Mass Effect 2 in particular is frequently praised as one of the greatest action RPGs, with Wall's iconic 'Suicide Mission' track standing as a franchise highlight for many fans.

However, Wall's absence from 2012's Mass Effect 3 surprised many. In a recent interview with The Guardian, the composer pointed to creative differences with former Mass Effect director Casey Hudson.

"Casey wasn't entirely satisfied with my work by the end," Wall admitted. "But I remain incredibly proud of that score. It earned a Bafta nomination and resonated with players... even if it didn't fully meet Casey's expectations."

While The Guardian suggested "creative tension" between the two, Wall remained diplomatic. "These professional disagreements happen - it's part of the industry," he reflected. "It was one of the rare challenging moments in my career, but ultimately these situations occur in creative fields."

Wall did elaborate on the demanding production of Mass Effect 2's soundtrack, particularly the creation of 'Suicide Mission', which may explain the eventual strain in his working relationship with Hudson.

"It was the most mentally exhausting creative challenge I've ever faced," Wall recalled. "With the team focused on finishing the game, I had little guidance. My initial submission required significant adjustments from the developers, but their efforts paid off... I still consider it one of gaming's greatest finale sequences. Every ounce of struggle was worth it."

Following Mass Effect 2, Wall contributed to multiple Call of Duty titles, most recently composing for Black Ops 6. Meanwhile, BioWare is developing a new Mass Effect installment after completing Dragon Age: The Veilguard, though the studio hasn't yet announced who will score the upcoming game.
