Helldivers 2 Director Takes Break After 11 Years, Set to Work on Arrowhead's Next Game

by Allison May 25,2025

Johan Pilestedt, the creative director behind Helldivers 2, has announced his sabbatical leave after dedicating 11 years to the Helldivers franchise. Starting with the original game in 2013 and continuing with Helldivers 2 since early 2016, Pilestedt has been working tirelessly on the intellectual property. In a heartfelt tweet, he expressed the need to take a break to reconnect with family, friends, and himself, acknowledging the sacrifices made over the years.

Upon his return, Pilestedt plans to dive into Arrowhead's next project, leaving Helldivers 2 in the capable hands of his colleagues at Arrowhead. The studio promises to continue delivering exceptional content to the game's community during his absence.

Helldivers 2's launch in February 2024 was nothing short of spectacular, becoming PlayStation Studios' fastest-selling game ever, with 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. The cooperative shooter's success has been so immense that Sony is now adapting it into a movie. Pilestedt became the public face of the game, engaging actively with the community across various platforms, discussing both its successes and challenges.

However, the game's success brought unforeseen issues, including server problems at launch and subsequent community toxicity. Arrowhead faced criticism over weapon balance, the impact of Premium Warbonds, and notably, Sony's decision to require PC players to link a PlayStation Network account, which led to a significant backlash and review-bombing on Steam. The controversy consumed a week of the team's time just to manage the fallout.

Before Helldivers 2, Arrowhead had found success with the original Helldivers and Magicka, but the sequel's triumph elevated the studio's profile significantly. The increased visibility brought new challenges, including threats and rude behavior from some community members, as Pilestedt revealed in an interview with G.biz.

In response to the game's demands and his role within the studio, Pilestedt transitioned from CEO to chief creative officer, allowing him to focus more on game development and community engagement. Shams Jorjani, formerly with Paradox and a publisher of Magicka, stepped in as the new CEO of Arrowhead.

While details about Arrowhead's next game remain under wraps, fans can expect a wait before its release. In the meantime, Arrowhead continues to support Helldivers 2, recently introducing the Illuminate as a third enemy faction, adding fresh content to keep the community engaged.
