Elden Ring: Nightreign removes the in-game messaging feature, a departure from FromSoftware's tradition. Project director Junya Ishizaki explained this decision in an interview, citing the game's shorter play sessions. Nightreign's approximately forty-minute gameplay sessions leave insufficient time for players to write or read messages.
"With sessions lasting roughly forty minutes, there isn't enough time to send your own messages or read other people's messages, so we disabled the messaging feature," Ishizaki stated.
This change is notable given FromSoftware's past reliance on player messages to enhance the experience. However, the development team deemed the feature unsuitable for Nightreign's design.
To respect the original Elden Ring, Nightreign features a separate narrative. It provides a new adventure with unique challenges and encounters, while preserving the core atmosphere and complexity of the Elden Ring world.
