In *Dune: Awakening*, sandworms play the role of a formidable natural force, rather than being at the beck and call of players. Unlike the universe crafted by Frank Herbert, where characters could summon these colossal creatures using a thumper, this feature will not be part of the game's mechanics.

According to the game's developers, sandworms are treated as NPCs with predetermined patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors integrated into the game engine. Players cannot strategically summon a sandworm near an enemy's base to disrupt their operations. However, should a sandworm be in the vicinity, players can attempt to draw its attention by actively moving across the sand or using a thumper. Even these actions, though, do not ensure the worm's presence in the area.
The iconic act of riding sandworms, a staple in Herbert's novels and a hallmark of the Freman culture, will not be available at the launch of *Dune: Awakening*. The developers have cited pressure from the filmmakers behind the *Dune* cinematic universe as the reason for excluding this feature. However, there is a glimmer of hope for fans as post-launch updates might introduce additional content related to Freman culture, possibly including the much-anticipated worm-riding mechanics. For the time being, there is no guarantee that players will have the opportunity to engage in this legendary activity.
*Dune: Awakening* is set to launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions to follow at a later date.
