Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’s lead designer reveals the surprising story behind Dondoko Island's expansive furniture collection—a clever blend of creative editing and asset reuse. Discover how this seemingly small minigame blossomed into a massive undertaking.
In a recent interview with Automaton, Michiko Hatoyama, lead designer of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, shared the unexpected journey of Dondoko Island. Initially conceived as a smaller minigame, its scope dramatically expanded during development. Hatoyama explained, “At first, Dondoko Island was a little smaller, but it kind of grew larger before we knew it.” This growth was fueled by a significant increase in the number of available furniture recipes.
The key to this rapid expansion? RGG Studio's masterful use of asset reuse. By cleverly repurposing and modifying existing assets from the Yakuza series' rich library, the team created individual pieces of furniture “in a matter of minutes,” a stark contrast to the days or even months typically required for new asset creation.
This expansion, both in terms of furniture and island size, reflects a commitment to providing players with fresh and engaging gameplay. The sheer scale of Dondoko Island, with its extensive list of furniture recipes, empowers players to transform this humble garbage dump into a luxurious five-star resort, offering unparalleled freedom and creative satisfaction.
Released on January 25, 2024, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth—the ninth mainline entry in the Yakuza series (excluding spin-offs)—has been lauded by both longtime fans and newcomers. This extensive game history provided RGG Studio with a vast pool of assets, enabling the creation of Dondoko Island, a minigame of surprising scale that can consume countless hours of dedicated island-building fun.
