Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Ends as NetherRealm Moves On

Mortal Kombat Future

Warner Bros. has confirmed Mortal Kombat 1 fans' worst fears following the Definitive Edition launch – no additional DLC characters or story expansions will be developed for the game.

The latest installment has sold 5 million copies, pushing the franchise past 100 million lifetime sales. While respectable, these figures pale compared to Mortal Kombat 11's record-breaking performance – the previous entry surpassed Mortal Kombat X's 11 million sales shortly after launch and reached over 15 million by 2022.

NetherRealm Shifts Focus to Next Project

"We hear players requesting ongoing Mortal Kombat 1 support," Warner Bros. stated via official channels. "While we'll maintain balance updates and fixes, no further DLC characters or story content will be released."

The publisher acknowledged fan disappointment but stressed that NetherRealm must redirect resources "to ensure our next project meets expectations." Though unconfirmed, industry speculation strongly suggests this refers to Injustice 3, the next chapter in NetherRealm's DC Universe fighting series.

March 2025's T-1000 guest fighter now stands as Mortal Kombat 1's final major content addition. Interestingly, NetherRealm continued supporting Mortal Kombat 11 for over two years before shifting focus – this latest transition comes just one year and eight months post-launch.

Broken Promises Spark Backlash

The announcement contradicts previous assurances from Creative Director Ed Boon, who tweeted in September 2024 that NetherRealm remained "fully committed to Mortal Kombat 1 for the long haul." Fans are circulating this statement widely across forums and social media.

A January 2024 resurgence occurred when players discovered secret battles against "Floyd," a pink ninja Boon had teased for years. The community-wide hunt temporarily revitalized interest, but such moments proved fleeting for what many consider a disappointing sequel.

What's Next for the Franchise?

Warner Bros. Discovery executives have signaled continued confidence in the gory fighter, naming Mortal Kombat among four core gaming franchises they plan to prioritize. The property's cinematic future also appears secure, with Mortal Kombat 2 slated for theatrical release later this year.

As the dust settles, the fighting game community eagerly awaits NetherRealm's next move – will they revisit the DC Universe with Injustice 3, or surprise fans with something entirely new?
