*Avowed* has hit the shelves, and Obsidian's latest RPG is a blend of familiar elements that should delight seasoned players while welcoming newcomers to the genre. If you're new to RPGs, don't worry—here are some tips to help you dive into the world of *Avowed* with confidence.
Like many RPGs, *Avowed* lets you earn XP through quests, defeating enemies, exploring new areas, and more. Leveling up rewards you with attribute points and ability points, allowing you to tailor your character's strengths. Whether you envision your character as a melee warrior or a spell-casting wizard, *Avowed* gives you the freedom to choose. Attributes influence your character's proficiency in various skills. Personally, I gravitate towards the scholar class due to my love for reading, but feel free to experiment and find what suits you best. One of the game's beginner-friendly features is the ability to reassign your points if your initial build doesn't pan out as expected.
While *Avowed* isn’t a fully open world, it offers a non-linear experience that encourages exploration beyond the main story objectives. It's easy to follow the markers and stick to the main quest, but part of the RPG charm is getting lost in the world. Exploring buildings, caves, and various areas can yield valuable loot and resources. You'll also stumble upon side quests that offer easy XP and enrich your gameplay experience.
Dive into the lore through books and notes scattered throughout the world. Obsidian excels at storytelling, so don't just collect these items—read them to deepen your understanding of *Avowed*'s universe. Keep an eye out for treasure maps as well; they can lead to special gear or coins, which are crucial for enhancing your equipment. Exploring extensively will also help you amass gold, enabling you to purchase better weapons and gear. This preparation can be a game-changer, especially when facing formidable bosses. Rushing through the story might leave you underpowered, so take your time and enjoy the journey.
Combat in *Avowed* can be challenging for newcomers. Balancing physical and essence attacks while keeping an eye on your health and essence bars is key. Health and essence potions are essential—health potions restore a significant amount of health, while essence potions refill your essence bar. You can find these potions scattered around the world or buy them from vendors in cities. They're easy to spot with their bright red (health) and pink (essence) colors.
Be mindful of when to use these potions. For minor health loss, use food items you've collected, which can also cure effects like poison. Save health potions for when your health is critically low. Unlike *Call of Duty*, where you might reload after every kill, use potions strategically in *Avowed*.

As you level up, you'll gain skill and attribute points to enhance your combat and conversation abilities. But don't forget to upgrade your companions. Neglecting their development can lead to frustrating restarts after tough battles. Strong companions can provide crucial support in combat, including healing abilities that benefit the entire party. Keep them well-equipped and upgraded to ensure they're effective allies in your quest for victory.
Throughout your journey, you'll collect resources that can be used to upgrade your weapons and gear. At your camp, you'll find a station where you can perform these upgrades. Early in the game, you might switch weapons frequently, so be strategic about when to invest resources. Upgrading gear not only boosts attack power and critical chance but also offers better protection against damage. Investing in your equipment can significantly enhance your performance in combat.
The beauty of RPGs like *Avowed* lies in the freedom to create your own story. Whether you're focused on the main quest or eager to explore every side quest, the choice is yours. Embrace the world of *Avowed*, save the Living Lands your way, and most importantly, have fun doing it.
And that’s a beginner’s guide to *Avowed*.
*Avowed is available now on PC and Xbox.*
