The Witcher’s Doug Cockle on Becoming Netflix’s Latest Geralt

by Bella Feb 26,2025

Doug Cockle, the voice of Geralt in CD Projekt Red's Witcher games, reprises his iconic role in Netflix's animated film, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. Unlike the live-action series, Cockle's performance wasn't altered to match Henry Cavill or Liam Hemsworth's portrayals, preserving the familiar gravelly voice fans have cherished for nearly two decades.

Cockle's journey began in 2005, voicing Geralt for the first Witcher game. He recalls the initial challenge of maintaining the character's low vocal register, often spending eight to nine hours daily recording, leading to significant vocal strain. This rigorous process, however, strengthened his vocal chords, a transformation he humorously compares to an athlete's training.

The release of Andrzej Sapkowski's books in English significantly impacted his performance during The Witcher 2. Reading The Last Wish provided invaluable insight into Geralt's character, clarifying the developers' direction towards a more emotionally restrained portrayal. Cockle, however, embraced the opportunity to subtly infuse emotion into his performance. He particularly appreciates Sapkowski's writing style, drawing parallels to his childhood love of Tolkien. Season of Storms stands out as a favorite, a story he'd relish the chance to voice in future adaptations.

Sirens of the Deep, based on the short story "A Little Sacrifice," offers a darker take on The Little Mermaid. While the film features intense action and political intrigue, Cockle highlights the lighter moments, particularly a humorous exchange between Geralt and Jaskier, showcasing Geralt's often-overlooked softer side. He relishes the versatility of Geralt's personality, appreciating both his serious and humorous aspects.

The anime presented a unique challenge: speaking Mermaid. Cockle found this surprisingly difficult despite phonetic preparation.

Cockle's return to the video game world in The Witcher 4, where Ciri takes center stage, is highly anticipated. While details are scarce, he expresses excitement about the shift in perspective, believing it's a compelling narrative choice.
