Ubisoft Announces XDefiant Server Shutdown in June 2025

Ubisoft has revealed plans to sunset its free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, with servers ceasing operation on June 3rd, 2025. The shutdown process begins December 3rd, 2024, halting new player registrations, downloads, and in-game purchases. Refunds for eligible purchases are underway.
Refund Information:
Full refunds will be issued for the Ultimate Founders Pack. Players who made in-game purchases (VC and DLC) since November 3rd, 2024, will also receive complete refunds. Processing may take up to eight weeks, with refunds expected by January 28th, 2025. Contact Ubisoft support for assistance after this date. Note that the standard Founder's Pack and Founder's Pack Elite are not eligible for refunds.
Reasons for Shutdown:
Ubisoft's Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer, Marie-Sophie Waubert, cited the game's failure to meet player retention targets within the highly competitive free-to-play FPS market. Despite an initial positive response, XDefiant couldn't sustain sufficient player numbers to justify further investment.
Impact on XDefiant Team and Studios:
Approximately half of the XDefiant development team will transition to other roles within Ubisoft. However, the San Francisco and Osaka studios will close, and the Sydney studio will significantly downsize, resulting in job losses for 143 employees in San Francisco and 134 in Osaka and Sydney combined. This follows previous layoffs in August 2024 affecting other Ubisoft studios. Ubisoft is providing severance packages and career assistance to affected employees.

Positive Reflections and Season 3:
Despite the shutdown, XDefiant Executive Producer Mark Rubin highlighted the positive community interactions and thanked players for their support. Season 3 will still launch as planned, though details remain scarce. Speculation points to potential Assassin's Creed themed content, as indicated in a now-removed Year 1 Roadmap blog post. However, access to Season 3 will be limited to players who acquired the game before December 3rd, 2024.

Prior Reports and Market Competition:
Insider Gaming reported on August 29th, 2024, citing low player counts as a contributing factor to XDefiant's struggles. While initially denied, the shutdown announcement confirms these concerns. The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 between XDefiant's Season 2 and 3 likely impacted player interest.
