Grand Theft Auto 6's Fall 2025 Console-Only Launch: A Risky Gamble?

Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) is slated for a Fall 2025 release, exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This notable omission of PC from the initial launch lineup has sparked considerable debate. While consistent with Rockstar's past release strategies, this decision feels increasingly anachronistic in 2025, given the PC platform's growing dominance in the gaming market.

Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, in a recent interview with IGN, acknowledged the PC's importance and hinted at an eventual PC release for GTA 6, stating that Rockstar historically releases on select platforms initially before expanding to others. This aligns with the studio's past practice of delaying PC releases and its sometimes-strained relationship with the modding community.

However, the question remains: how long will PC gamers wait? Considering the Fall 2025 console launch window, a PC release likely won't arrive until at least 2026. This delay represents a significant potential loss, as Zelnick himself noted that PC versions of multiplatform games can account for 40% or more of total sales.

The decision to exclude PC at launch is particularly intriguing given the current console market. Sales of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are slowing, with no next-gen consoles on the horizon from Sony or Microsoft. Zelnick highlighted the PC market's growth as console sales decline, emphasizing its increasing importance.

Interestingly, some speculate that the PS5 Pro might become a dedicated "GTA 6 machine," although experts doubt it could achieve 4K/60fps performance. Zelnick, however, expressed confidence that GTA 6's release will boost console sales, mirroring past trends where major titles have driven hardware purchases.

The exclusion of PC from the initial GTA 6 launch presents a significant risk for Rockstar and Take-Two. While the potential for increased console sales exists, ignoring the substantial PC market segment could prove to be a costly oversight, especially for a title anticipated to be one of the biggest entertainment launches ever.
