Emberstoria, a new strategy RPG from Square Enix, launches exclusively in Japan on November 27th. The game, set in a world called Purgatory, features resurrected warriors ("Embers") battling monsters. It boasts a classic Square Enix style: a grand, dramatic storyline, impressive art, and a diverse roster of characters. Players build their own flying city, Anima Arca, and experience a story voiced by over 40 actors.
While a Western release isn't confirmed, anticipation is high. However, recent news regarding the transfer of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent's operations to NetEase raises questions about Square Enix's future mobile strategy. This new release might offer clues. Emberstoria could remain Japan-only, or NetEase might bring it West. Either way, a global launch won't be simple, but it's not out of the question. The game's eventual release path could significantly illuminate Square Enix's mobile gaming plans.
The exclusivity highlights the frequent disparity between Japanese and Western mobile game markets. Many intriguing Japanese mobile titles never see international releases. If you're curious, explore our list of the best Japanese mobile games we hope will eventually launch globally.
