Launching September 26, Marvel's Spider-Man becomes the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic's Universes Beyond series following Final Fantasy. Unlike 2023's Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set, this release won't feature preconstructed Commander decks. The Scene Box cards shown above won't be Standard-legal, specifically designed for Commander play.
While last year's Wolverine and Captain America Secret Lair first introduced Marvel to Magic, Spider-Man marks the inaugural full set adapting comic book source material. Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall explains this format allows proper representation of Spider-Man's expansive universe.
"Spider-Man requires a complete set to properly showcase the character..."
"A full set lets us include numerous villains and supporting characters from Spidey's history," McCall elaborates. "Condensing Spider-Man content into a smaller product would force painful omissions. While Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales might fit elsewhere, we wouldn't have space for essential figures like Aunt May."
McCall notes Universes Beyond development reverses traditional Magic design priorities. "With established characters like Spider-Man, we build mechanics around familiar story moments rather than introducing new lore. This allows more complex designs since players already understand the underlying narratives."
Head Designer Mark Rosewater explains how Spider-Man's essence translates through Magic's color system: "The color pie contains all necessary elements for representing heroes and villains. Spider-Man embodies white through his sense of responsibility, blue through scientific origins, and green via his animalistic powers and destiny." The Scene Box version focuses on white and blue aspects.
"We're drawing from the entire Spider-Man mythos without restricting ourselves to specific comic runs."
The set includes standard Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs visible in our gallery. While lacking Commander precons, it revives Welcome Decks - free introductory products helping new players learn the game.
Following this year's Final Fantasy release, Wizards announced an Avatar: The Last Airbender set. Two original Magic expansions - Tarkir: Dragontsorm and cosmic-themed Edge of Eternities - will launch first.
