The Last of Us Season 2's Abby Didn't Bulk Up Because HBO Didn't Need to Emulate Certain Video Game Mechanics, Neil Druckmann Says

HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 will portray Abby differently than in the game. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the muscular physique of the game's Abby because the show's narrative prioritizes drama over constant violent action. The character's physicality is less crucial to the story's impact.

Druckmann highlights the differing needs of the game versus the show: the game required distinct gameplay mechanics for Ellie and Abby, necessitating different physical portrayals. The show, however, focuses on the emotional depth of the characters. He emphasizes that while action is present, it's not the primary focus.

Craig Mazin, co-showrunner, adds that the show explores a more "physically vulnerable" Abby, whose strength lies in her spirit. The series will delve into the origins and manifestations of her formidable nature.

The show's adaptation of Part 2 will likely span multiple seasons, unlike Season 1's single-season coverage of the first game. Season 2, comprising seven episodes, concludes with a "natural breakpoint," suggesting future installments.

The creators acknowledge the intense negative reactions to Abby's character in the game, including harassment of Naughty Dog employees. This led to increased security measures for actress Kaitlyn Dever during filming. Isabel Merced (Dina) underscores that Abby is a fictional character, emphasizing the absurdity of the real-world hate directed at her.
