Conquer the Arbiter of Ash: A Guide to the Burning Monolith in Path of Exile 2

The Burning Monolith, a unique map location in Path of Exile 2's Atlas of Worlds, resembles a Realmgate but presents a significantly greater challenge. Accessing it requires three elusive Crisis Fragments, each obtained by conquering a Citadel – exceptionally rare and difficult map nodes.

Unlocking the Arbiter of Ash Encounter

The Burning Monolith serves as the arena for the endgame pinnacle boss, the formidable Arbiter of Ash. Your first attempt to activate the Monolith's door initiates "The Pinnacle of Flame" quest, branching into three sub-quests: Ezomyte Infiltration (Iron Citadel), Faridun Foray (Copper Citadel), and Vaal Incursion (Stone Citadel). Successfully completing these Citadels yields the three essential Crisis Fragments. Combine these fragments at the Monolith's altar to unlock the Arbiter of Ash encounter. Prepare meticulously; this boss is renowned for its immense health pool and devastating attacks, demanding a highly optimized build.

Locating the Elusive Citadels

Path of Exile 2 features three Citadels: Iron, Copper, and Stone, each guarded by a unique map boss. Securing the corresponding Crisis Fragment requires defeating these bosses. The primary difficulty lies in their unpredictable location.

Citadels are one-time attempts. The Atlas's randomized generation ensures unique map layouts for every player. While definitive strategies are lacking, community observations suggest these approaches:

  1. Directional Exploration: Choose a direction on the Atlas and systematically explore until you discover a Citadel. Utilizing Towers provides a broader perspective.

  2. Corruption Tracking: Focus on map nodes exhibiting corruption, often found at the Atlas's periphery. Clear these nodes, unlock nearby Towers for improved visibility, and repeat. This method complements directional exploration.

  3. Clustered Appearance: Anecdotal evidence suggests Citadels tend to cluster. Discovering one might lead to the others' proximity.

Citadel hunting is a late-game endeavor, best undertaken with a fully optimized build and substantial boss-killing experience.

Alternatively, Crisis Fragments can be purchased via the in-game trading website or Currency Exchange, though their rarity often commands a high price. This option might be preferable to the time-consuming hunt.
