Argentine Studio Matajuegos Releases Surreal Documentary Game Atuel

Argentine indie studio Matajuegos has launched its surreal documentary experience Atuel on Android and PC via Steam. Originally debuting on itch.io in September 2022, the experimental title gained recognition for its poetic storytelling, unconventional gameplay, and mesmerizing visuals.

Award-Winning Digital Experience

The game earned prestigious accolades including IndieCade 2022's Innovation in Experience Design Award. Its unique format secured showcases at international venues like Cannes' Marché du Film and Washington D.C.'s Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Immersive Environmental Narrative

Atuel examines human-environment connections in western Argentina's Cuyo desert region through an interactive lens. Players traverse dreamlike landscapes mirroring the Atuel River Valley while absorbing real testimonies from scientists and residents.

Transformative Gameplay

The experience transcends traditional mechanics - players fluidly morph between animals, ecological elements, and even the Atuel river itself. These transformations create an organic exploration of climate change themes and humanity's relationship with natural resources.

Inspiration Behind the Experience

The creative vision draws from Argentina's longest river in Mendoza, which originates from Andean glaciers and carves the dramatic Atuel Canyon. This biodiverse ecosystem directly influenced the game's visual poetry.

A New Kind of Documentary

Developed with international filmmakers from The 12.01 Project, lead artist Santiago Franzani describes Atuel as prioritizing emotional truth over realism. The project communicates through movement, soundscapes, and visual metaphors rather than traditional documentary techniques.

Currently free-to-play with full controller support, Atuel invites players to contemplate environmental relationships through its surreal lens. Download now on Google Play.
