"Oblivion Remastered's 'Spookmane' Ghost Hunt Intrigues Community"

by Noah May 17,2025

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is brimming with eerie elements—skeletons, spirits, and zombies abound. Yet, an unexpected apparition has caught the community's attention: a ghostly horse that no one recalls seeing in either the original 2006 game or the 2025 remaster.

The mystery began with a Reddit post from user TaricIsNotASupport, who stumbled upon what appears to be a spectral equine entity.

Uhhhh, guys, is this new?

"So, I was crafting some quirky spells in Frostcrag Spire, which is my favorite way to enjoy the game. But as I exited the divisive Cosy Chaos Spire, I spotted something incredibly unusual in the distance," TaricIsNotASupport recounted.

"Like any sensible person, I dashed over there like a maniac. To my astonishment, there was this unnamed spectral horse. I've poured thousands of hours into the original Oblivion and already logged over a hundred hours in the Remaster, but this is the first time I've encountered this horse. I'm unsure if it's a new addition or something I've always missed."

TaricIsNotASupport sought the community's help to unravel this mystery, igniting a virtual ghost hunt. Players scoured the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages website for any mention of a spectral mount in the original game, to no avail.

To the people asking if I can ride or interact with the spooky horse, yes! 1/2

Could this be a mod? TaricIsNotASupport clarified they were playing on a PlayStation 5, where mods are not available. They also shared a video of their character riding the ghost horse, which, despite its ethereal nature, functions like any other horse in Oblivion. "He fast travels and even gets stabled!" TaricIsNotASupport exclaimed. "By all accounts, it's now my steed!"

Speculation suggests this might be a glitch, perhaps triggered by a misfired spell. Bethesda games are notorious for their bugs, and this ghost horse could be another entry in that list. "Very weird, the wiki says there are only two unique horses, Shadowmere and unicorns," commented ClaymoreBeatz. "There are no horse mods that do this, so I doubt you're lying about not being on PC. This might be a glitch unique to the Remastered version or a glitched magical effect. Armored horses' names change to 'Armored horse,' so maybe it's an armored horse that got hit by a spell, resulting in a glitched name and effect."

I was asked if Spookmane* can be buffed and if it stays spectral; the answer is yes!

Some speculate that Bethesda and Virtuos, the developers behind the remaster, might have included this ghost horse as a hidden surprise for players to discover. Though less likely, it's an intriguing thought that could hint at other secrets lurking within the remastered game.

Many players are eager to replicate TaricIsNotASupport's discovery to claim their own ghost horse. However, no specific method has been identified yet.

In the absence of an official name, TaricIsNotASupport has dubbed their spectral steed 'Spookmane,' a fitting moniker. They've vowed to continue their adventures with Spookmane by their side. Whether a one-off occurrence, a secret, or a glitch, Spookmane has undoubtedly captured the fascination—and perhaps affection—of the Oblivion community.

"This creature might be my favorite new friend I've made," TaricIsNotASupport said. "Spookmane, you're glorious and I love you."

Oblivion Remastered, crafted by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, boasts numerous enhancements. Running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, the game features revamped leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. New dialogue, a true third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology have been added, with fans debating whether the game should be considered a remake. Bethesda has clarified their choice to pursue a remaster.

With the game now released, players advise newcomers to tackle Kvatch early to avoid the challenges posed by level scaling. Additionally, one player reportedly ventured beyond Cyrodiil to explore Valenwood, Skyrim, and Hammerfell, the speculated setting for The Elder Scrolls VI.
