Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a surprise for fans of the iconic Ninja Gaiden franchise: the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4 and a remake, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja," promising a thrilling resurgence of the series.
Ninja Gaiden 4: A New Era Begins
Developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 marks the series' return after a 13-year hiatus. This direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3 promises the signature challenging yet rewarding gameplay fans have come to expect. The collaboration between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames is a significant event, merging the classic Ninja Gaiden action with PlatinumGames' renowned speed and dynamism.
A New Protagonist Takes Center Stage
Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to become a Master Ninja. Art Director Tomoko Nishii (PlatinumGames) describes Yakumo as a character designed to stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the series' iconic protagonist. While Yakumo is the main focus, Ryu Hayabusa remains a crucial part of the story, serving as a formidable challenge and mentor figure for the new hero. Rest assured, Ryu Hayabusa will also be playable.
Revamped Combat and New Styles
Ninja Gaiden 4 retains the series' signature brutal, fast-paced combat. Yakumo's unique fighting style includes the new "Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style," complementing the "Raven Style." While distinct from Ryu's approach, the developers assure fans that the action will feel authentic to the Ninja Gaiden legacy. The game is currently 70-80% complete, entering the final polishing stages.
Release Date and Availability
Ninja Gaiden 4 is slated for release in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Classic Reforged
To tide fans over until Ninja Gaiden 4's release, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 title, is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and included with Xbox Game Pass. This version adds playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, enhancing the experience for both veterans and newcomers.
The revival of the Ninja Gaiden franchise promises a thrilling year for action game fans. With a new protagonist, refined combat, and the return of a classic, 2025 is shaping up to be a truly remarkable year for ninjas.
