Marvel Snap's second year brings us another alternate character: Doctor Doom's 2099 variant. This guide explores the top Doom 2099 decks and whether he's worth the investment.
How Doom 2099 Functions in Marvel Snap | Top Day-One Doom 2099 Decks | Is Doom 2099 Worth the Investment?
Doom 2099 is a 4-cost, 2-power card. His ability: "After each turn, add a DoomBot 2099 to a random location if you played (exactly) 1 card." DoomBot 2099 (also 4-cost, 2-power) has the ability: “Ongoing: Your other DoomBots and Doom have +1 Power.” Crucially, this buff applies to both Doom 2099 and regular Doctor Doom.
Playing one card per turn maximizes Doom 2099's potential. Early placement yields 3 DoomBots, adding significant board presence. Optimal play can turn him into a 17-power card, even more with Magik's game extension.
Two drawbacks exist: random DoomBot placement can hurt your strategy, and Enchantress completely negates their power boost.
Doom 2099's "one card per turn" requirement revives Spectrum Ongoing decks. Here's an example:
Ant-Man, Goose, Psylocke, Captain America, Cosmo, Electro, Doom 2099, Wong, Klaw, Doctor Doom, Spectrum, Onslaught [Untapped List Link]
This budget-friendly deck (only Doom 2099 is a Series 5 card) offers flexibility. Early Doom 2099 with Psylocke or turn 3 Electro allows for powerful plays. Wong, Klaw, and Doctor Doom combinations spread power effectively. Electro allows for strong plays with Onslaught and high-cost cards. Cosmo protects against Enchantress. If Doom 2099 isn't played early, the deck can still win with Doctor Doom or Spectrum buffs.
Another viable strategy utilizes a Patriot-style deck:
Ant-Man, Zabu, Dazzler, Mister Sinister, Patriot, Brood, Doom 2099, Super Skrull, Iron Lad, Blue Marvel, Doctor Doom, Spectrum [Untapped List Link]
This inexpensive deck (again, only Doom 2099 is Series 5) uses early-game cards like Mister Sinister and Brood before deploying Doom 2099, followed by Blue Marvel and Doctor Doom or Spectrum. Zabu discounts 4-cost cards for early plays. Strategic skipping of DoomBot spawns allows for two 3-cost cards on the final turn (e.g., Patriot and a discounted Iron Lad). However, this deck is highly vulnerable to Enchantress; Super Skrull provides counterplay against other Doom 2099 decks.
While Daken and Miek (released alongside Doom 2099) are weak, Doom 2099 is a worthwhile investment. His power and deck-building versatility make him a likely meta staple. Use Collector's Tokens if available; don't miss out on this potentially history-making card (unless nerfed).
