The Nintendo GameCube is set to arrive on Nintendo Switch Online alongside the launch of the Switch 2, complete with a dedicated classic controller. However, some fine print suggests this new GameCube controller for the Switch 2 might officially be limited to GameCube titles.
As noted in the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer (via VGC), a statement reads: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This implies the controller will function properly only when playing GameCube games through the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, not with other Switch 2 software.
VGC points out that similar disclaimers on other Nintendo retro controllers haven't always meant full limitations—players have often found ways to use them in compatible scenarios. It's also worth noting that the same disclaimer does not appear in the North American trailer.
This is especially interesting because the classic GameCube controller has enough inputs to handle many common gameplay functions on the Switch 2. It could simply be a case of managing expectations—or preventing frustration if someone, for instance, tries to use the controller for navigation like a mouse.
Even if this official GameCube controller isn't for you, Nintendo has confirmed that the original GameCube Controller Adapter will work with the Switch 2 dock via USB. Those who held onto the adapter since the Wii U era are certainly getting continued value from the accessory.
The classic GameCube controller for the Switch 2 is expected to launch alongside the new console, but a pre-order date has not yet been announced. Pre-orders have faced some uncertainty due to recent U.S. tariffs causing logistical disruptions.
This marks a major expansion of the Nintendo Switch Online library, giving subscribers access to a wide range of classic 2000s titles at launch this summer—including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2. The library will continue to grow over time, with teased additions like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
