Larian Studios, following the phenomenal success of Baldur's Gate 3, is now fully dedicated to its next project. While limited post-launch support continues for BG3, including the upcoming Patch 8 with new features, the studio's primary focus has shifted.
Before the 2023 release of Baldur's Gate 3, Larian Studios, already renowned for its Divinity: Original Sin series, secured the Baldur's Gate license. Baldur's Gate 3's massive success, garnering numerous Game of the Year awards, significantly elevated Larian's profile and generated considerable anticipation for their future endeavors.
In a statement, Larian confirmed its complete concentration on its next game, implementing a temporary media blackout to maintain focus. While Patch 8 will introduce additional features to Baldur's Gate 3, further major support appears unlikely.
The nature of Larian's next title remains largely undisclosed. Although a new studio was established in mid-2024 to support two ambitious RPGs, the current project count is unconfirmed. Speculation ranges from a Divinity: Original Sin 3 to a completely new IP, leveraging the expertise gained from Baldur's Gate 3.
The future of the Baldur's Gate franchise is also uncertain. Wizards of the Coast faces the challenge of finding a suitable developer to maintain the series' high standards set by Larian's achievement. However, the possibility of familiar actors reprising their roles in future installments remains.
