Hungry Horrors, an upcoming quirky roguelite deckbuilder from Clumsy Bear Studio, a UK-based game developer, introduces a unique gameplay twist where you don’t fight monsters but instead cook for them to satisfy their hunger. The game has recently released its first playable demo on Steam, which you can also find on Itch and GOG.
Following its PC debut, Clumsy Bear Studio plans to bring Hungry Horrors to mobile and console platforms. Although an official release date hasn't been announced, the demo is available for you to explore. The development team has actively engaged with the community, showcasing the game at events like the London Game Festival 2025.
The Steam demo offers a substantial preview of what’s in store. It includes two handcrafted biomes, six different monsters to serve, two boss fights, and interactions with four NPCs. Additionally, there are non-combat zones such as the Nook and the Trove, where you can regroup and refine your culinary strategy.
Take a peek at the game below.
In Hungry Horrors, you take on the role of a princess tasked with preparing traditional British and Irish dishes to appease folklore creatures and prevent them from attacking you. The game cleverly merges deckbuilding mechanics with culinary arts, creating an engaging and uniquely humorous experience.
The game's visual appeal lies in its retro pixel art style combined with gothic aesthetics, but its humor truly stands out. You’ll be whipping up dishes like Bara Brith and Cranachan, aiming to satisfy the specific tastes of each monster. These creatures, such as the blood-thirsty swamp witch Jenny Greenteeth or the child-snatching hag Black Annis, have been terrifying people for centuries. If your culinary creations don’t meet their expectations, you might find yourself on their menu!
Understanding and catering to each monster's preferences is key. You'll encounter legendary figures like Grendel and Redcap, each with their peculiar cravings. One might adore sweet treats, while another might detest fish.
The deckbuilding aspect adds another layer of strategy. You’ll combine ingredients, utilizing spices and herbs to enhance your meals. Balancing flavors and planning your dishes carefully is crucial to success.
As you advance, you’ll unlock new recipes and ingredients, along with legendary artifacts and rescued familiars. To dive deeper into the game, visit the Hungry Horrors page on Steam.
