Final Fantasy Creator Can't Stop, Won't Stop; Hopes to Create FF6's Spiritual Successor

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is defying retirement plans to develop a new game, envisioned as a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI. This follows the successful release of Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially intended as his final project.

A New Chapter, Inspired by FFVI

Sakaguchi's decision stems from the positive experience working with the team on Fantasian. He aims to create a game that blends classic elements with innovative features, describing it as "something old but new." This new endeavor will serve as "part two of my farewell note," he stated in an interview.

Development Update and Speculation

A 2024 Famitsu interview revealed the project's progress, with Sakaguchi estimating approximately two more years until completion. The recent trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" by Mistwalker has fueled speculation of a Fantasian sequel, though this remains unconfirmed. The new game will likely adhere to the fantasy RPG style of his previous works.

Reunion with Square Enix

The collaboration with Square Enix for the multi-platform release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension in December 2024 marked a significant return to his roots. Sakaguchi reflected on this partnership, highlighting the "fascinating experience" of completing his "final work" with his former employer. Despite this collaboration, he maintains his focus on new projects, stating he's transitioned from creator to consumer regarding his own past works.
