Civilization VII's rocky launch has left many Firaxis fans disappointed. Steam reviews, currently numbering over 1,000 and averaging a dismal 37%, paint a picture of a game plagued by significant issues.
Players overwhelmingly cite a substandard user interface, outdated graphics, and a pervasive feeling of incompleteness. One user, Cool CGI Dog, after just 1.5 hours of gameplay, described the game as "blatantly incomplete," criticizing the "1998-era" resource icons, clunky interface, and overall lack of polish. The $70 price tag, they argued, is wholly unjustified given the game's current state.
Another player, WillNever, echoed these sentiments after 2.5 hours, stating the interface felt like an untouched alpha build. While acknowledging intriguing new mechanics, the poor interface rendered the experience frustrating. Extensive improvements, they concluded, are essential to make the game enjoyable.
The prevalent opinion among reviewers is that Civilization VII launched prematurely and requires substantial updates. The $70 price point is a frequent target of criticism, deemed disproportionate to the game's current quality.
Series fans remain hopeful that Firaxis will address the widespread criticism through future patches. The Civilization franchise's reputation for quality is at stake, and players eagerly anticipate updates that will restore the game to its expected standard. For now, however, the current version falls significantly short.
