Ex-Rockstar Dev: GTA 6 Hype Enough, No More Trailers

by Ryan Oct 18,2025

As fans eagerly await more Grand Theft Auto 6 news following the debut of Trailer 1 in 2023, a former Rockstar developer suggests holding off on additional trailers until the game's launch.

Rockstar shattered records with GTA 6 Trailer 1 in December 2023 but has remained silent since. The prolonged wait has sparked wild speculation about when Trailer 2 might arrive.

Obsessive theories range from analyzing the bars in Lucia's jail cell to counting bullet holes in vehicles and scrutinizing license plates. The most notable theory involved tracking lunar phases - while this correctly predicted Trailer 1's announcement date, claims linking it to Trailer 2's release were ultimately disproven.

The burning question remains: When will GTA 6 Trailer 2 drop? Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick hints fans might need to wait until closer to the game's fall 2025 launch window.

Obbe Vermeij, former Rockstar technical director involved with the series through GTA 4's development until 2008, argues against releasing more trailers.

"If I were making decisions, I wouldn't release additional trailers," he tweeted. "The hype for VI is already massive, and preserving surprises would make the launch even more impactful."

When questioned if Rockstar might simply announce a release date without additional footage, Vermeij responded: "That would be a power move."

Would Rockstar actually adopt this approach? While labeling their first trailer as "Trailer 1" implies sequels, plans evolve. The studio might prioritize finalizing the game over producing analyzable marketing materials.

Vermeij recalled Rockstar delaying GTA 4 just three months before its planned October 2007 launch, suggesting GTA 6's fate could be decided similarly late.

"We only realized we'd miss deadlines at that point," Vermeij explained. "VI's decision timeline will likely mirror this. Watch Take-Two's August earnings report for clues."

In a March Bloomberg interview, Zelnick explained Rockstar's secrecy: "The anticipation for GTA 6 may be unprecedented in entertainment history," he said. "Having worked across multiple entertainment industries, we've learned the value of timing marketing close to release.

"While competitors announce schedules years ahead, we've found greater success generating excitement while managing expectations. It's a delicate balance we don't always perfect, but it's our strategic approach."

Former Rockstar animator Mike York, who contributed to GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 before leaving in 2017, suggested on his YouTube channel that Rockstar actively cultivates this speculative environment.

"They're deliberately silent to fuel community theories," York noted. "This secrecy builds mystique organically - the less they say, the more fans speculate."

He described how fans "actively dissect every detail, crafting elaborate theories about trailer dates" while Rockstar benefits from free marketing through speculation.

York believes Rockstar intentionally avoids announcing trailer dates to maintain mystery: "Releasing dates would end speculation, while silence fuels theories that organically build hype."

"This strategy fosters community engagement during development lulls," he continued. "The theories themselves become marketing - they drive discussion without official content."

Zelnick's comments suggest Trailer 2 might not arrive until late 2024 or 2025, assuming no delays occur. Fans may face a lengthy wait before seeing more gameplay.
