Epic Universe: First Look

by Emery Nov 10,2025

From the moment I entered Celestial Park – the gateway to Universal Orlando Resort’s newest theme park, Epic Universe – I felt an unmistakable sense of wonder. Before me stood portals to four fantastical realms I’d yearned to explore, each brimming with magic, mythical creatures, and beloved characters. While the journey isn’t flawless, Epic Universe surpasses expectations, delivering an unrivaled adventure.

What truly stays with me aren’t just the rides (though Monsters Unchained ranks among the world’s best attractions) but those transformative moments that whisked me away from reality. Where else could I bond with Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, chase Dracula with Dr. Frankenstein, leap into the Mushroom Kingdom, or stroll through 1920s Parisian wizardry? Only at Epic Universe – a destination that redefines theme park magic.

Super Nintendo World

Though Super Nintendo World and its Donkey Kong Country expansion exist elsewhere, experiencing them here felt revolutionary. As someone whose gaming roots trace back to childhood nights playing Super Mario World, stepping into this vibrant recreation overwhelmed me with nostalgia. The warp pipe transition from Celestial Park – complete with signature sound effects – made me feel like I was coming home rather than exploring something new.

Every detail amazed me: the spinning coins atop Mount Beanpole, Thwomps looming overhead, Peach’s Castle with its "jumpable" paintings, and scattered KONG letters straight from the games. Even without the Power-Up Band (which unlocks digital collectibles), punching illuminated Question Blocks fulfilled lifelong gaming fantasies. The land bursts with Nintendo Easter eggs – hidden Pikmin, a Yoshi’s Story book in queues, and even an 8-bit Mario hidden underground.

Surprisingly, the attractions proved the weakest link. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge lacked the speed I craved, and AR glasses restricted my view. Yoshi’s Adventure’s charming queue led to an unbearably slow ride under Florida’s scorching sun. Mine-Cart Madness’ track-jumping illusion suffered if seated in back. Still, Super Nintendo World shines through its environmental storytelling and plentiful accessibility options despite numerous stairs.

How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

As Toothless nuzzled my hand, his animatronic eyes closing in contentment, I achieved every dragon-lover’s dream. This meet-and-greet – responsive, expressive, and paired with a pitch-perfect Hiccup performer – became my all-time favorite theme park character experience. The vibrant Isle of Berk teems with mischievous dragons, woolly sheep, and cascading water features that enhance Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, my top family coaster pick.

Soaring through Berk to John Powell’s iconic score delivered pure joy, whereas Dragon Racer’s Rally’s missing soundtrack and Fyre Drill’s weak water guns underwhelmed. The multilevel dragon playground offers both fun and the land’s best vista. The Untrainable Dragon show dazzles with its massive puppets, though the storyline left me wanting.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic

While Battle at the Ministry’s queue rightfully generates buzz, 1920s Paris stole my heart. Dining at Café L’air De La Sirène – savoring French onion soup beneath Puffskein-accompanied live music – transported me utterly. Le Cirque Arcanus became my can’t-miss show, blending magical creatures and breathtaking performances with Potterverse charm.

The Ministry queue’s scale rivals Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance’s Star Destroyer, complete with interactive Daily Prophet pages and moving wanted posters. However, the ride’s screen-heavy approach and jerky motion pale compared to practical-effect driven attractions. Wand interactions proved frustratingly inconsistent – perhaps this muggle needs more practice!

Dark Universe

Dark Universe delivered the biggest surprise: Monsters Uncharked: The Frankenstein Experiment stands among the greatest rides I’ve experienced. This monster mash balances thrills with humor, blending screens and spectacular animatronics seamlessly. Curse of the Werewolf’s back-to-back seating creates a shared adrenaline rush as you flee lycanthropes.

The Burning Blade Tavern’s fiery windmill and excellent character actors (especially insult-hurling Ygor) enhance the atmosphere, though daylight diminishes the spooky vibe. After dark, the land’s gothic charm truly emerges.

Celestial Park

More than a hub, Celestial Park dazzles with cosmic beauty. Stardust Racers – a dueling coaster rivaling VelociCoaster’s intensity – becomes breathtaking at night, its intertwined tracks mimicking celestial bodies. While Constellation Carousel offers gentle starlit respite, limited shade plagues the park. Plan for sunscreen and hydration, or visit during cooler months.
