Hulu may be bringing back Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Variety reports a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role as Buffy, albeit as a recurring character, not the central focus. The series will instead follow a new Slayer.
Adding to the excitement, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved in this project.
Whedon's absence follows previous accusations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center on a new Slayer with the possibility of Gellar's return.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. She was aided by friends Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series' legacy continued through a spin-off, Angel, and canonical comic books.
