Following Avowed's successful launch, its director hints at future plans for the franchise. Read on to discover the possibilities of expansions, sequels, and other exciting projects in the works.
Microsoft and Obsidian are reportedly pleased with Avowed's sales performance. In a February 22, 2025 interview with Bloomberg, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for expansions or a sequel. While Obsidian hasn't publicly announced any concrete plans, Patel expressed her strong desire to continue working within this world, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Avowed's journey wasn't without its hurdles. Patel described the development process as "messy," highlighting the numerous challenges and changes encountered along the way. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's consideration of a sale, faced further complexities after Microsoft's acquisition in 2020. The team had to make difficult decisions, including scaling back features and abandoning the multiplayer component. A leadership change and game reboot in January 2021 further reshaped the project's trajectory.
Patel reflected on the experience of managing a large team, noting the difficulties of overseeing over 80 individuals during a creative overhaul. Under her leadership, the team refocused on strengthening the narrative and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, and shifted from an open world to open zones, allowing for improved environmental detail. She concluded, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
With the resurgence of the Pillars of Eternity franchise through Avowed, Obsidian is exploring new possibilities. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer revealed interest in developing a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game. While acknowledging the challenges of determining scope, budget, and visual fidelity, Sawyer confirmed the internal enthusiasm for such a project. This aligns with previous reports indicating developer interest in a tactics-based game, and Avowed's success may provide the impetus to move forward. Sawyer also reiterated his commitment to Pillars of Eternity 3, though he envisions a significantly larger budget, comparable to Baldur's Gate 3's $100 million investment.
Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
