Apex Legends Isn’t Doing the Business for EA, So It’s Making Apex Legends 2.0 to Come Out After Battlefield

EA's Apex Legends: A Sixth Birthday and a 2.0 Reboot?

As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, EA acknowledges its underperformance despite a massive player base. While the game boasts over 200 million players and remains a top performer on Steam, its revenue isn't meeting EA's expectations. CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed this in a recent financial call, stating that Apex Legends' net bookings are down year-over-year, although in line with projections.

Wilson highlighted the game's continued community support, focusing on quality-of-life improvements, anti-cheat measures, and new content creation. He admitted that progress, while present, hasn't been substantial enough.

The solution? EA is developing "Apex Legends 2.0," a significant update aimed at revitalizing the franchise, attracting new players, and boosting revenue. However, the launch is strategically planned for after the release of the next Battlefield title, anticipated before April 2026, placing Apex Legends 2.0 sometime in EA's 2027 fiscal year.

Wilson emphasized the long-term vision for Apex Legends, aiming to maintain its position as a leading franchise for years to come. This "2.0" update won't be the final iteration; EA plans further expansions and community support. The company is mindful of the challenges faced by competitors in the battle royale market, particularly referencing Activision's Warzone 2.0 reboot and its mixed reception.

While Apex Legends remains a top-performing game on Steam in terms of concurrent players, its player count is declining, raising concerns about the game's long-term trajectory. EA's strategy with Apex Legends 2.0 will be crucial in reversing this trend and ensuring the game's continued success.
