A significant shakeup has hit Annapurna Interactive, the video game division of Annapurna Pictures. The entire staff resigned following a dispute with Megan Ellison, leaving the future of the publishing arm uncertain.
The publisher behind acclaimed titles like Stray and What Remains of Edith Finch has lost its entire staff in a mass resignation. This follows failed negotiations between employees and parent company, Annapurna Pictures.
Reports suggest the staff, led by former president Nathan Gary, attempted to establish Annapurna Interactive as an independent entity. However, these efforts proved unsuccessful, resulting in over 20 employees resigning in solidarity with Gary.
"The entire 25-person Annapurna Interactive team resigned," confirmed Gary, as reported by Bloomberg. The team issued a joint statement emphasizing the difficult nature of their decision.
Annapurna Pictures' Ellison assured partners of their commitment to ongoing projects and continued expansion within interactive entertainment. Ellison stated to Bloomberg News their intention to integrate storytelling across film, TV, gaming, and theater.
The impact of this mass exodus is substantial. Indie developers partnered with Annapurna now face uncertainty, scrambling to establish new contacts and confirm the continuation of existing agreements.
Remedy Entertainment, whose Control 2 received partial funding from Annapurna Interactive, addressed the situation via communications director Thomas Puha on X (formerly Twitter). Puha clarified that Remedy's agreement for Control 2, including associated rights, is with Annapurna Pictures, and that Control 2 is self-published.
Annapurna Interactive has appointed Hector Sanchez, a co-founder, as its new president. Anonymous sources cited by Bloomberg report Sanchez's assurance to partners that existing contracts will be honored and the departed staff replaced.
The resignation follows a previously announced restructuring of Annapurna's gaming operations. Sanchez's appointment comes after the departure of Gary, and the co-heads of the indie division, Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella.
