Bethesda Game Studios has taken to X/Twitter to clarify why Virtuos' recently released The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is not considered a remake. The studio, known for its iconic fantasy RPG series, delved into the distinction between a remaster and a remake, emphasizing their approach with this latest release. As they expressed gratitude to both new players and those revisiting the game, Bethesda made it clear that their intention was never to "remake" the game but to "remaster" it, ensuring that the original experience remains intact while being enhanced by modern technology.
"We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology," Bethesda elaborated.
This clarification comes at a pivotal moment as fans experience Oblivion Remastered for the first time, with the game now available and featuring significant visual upgrades and gameplay enhancements. Notable updates include the ability to sprint and a revamped level-up system that blends elements from both the original Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
Despite these extensive changes, which some players perceive as transformative enough to be considered a remake, Bethesda maintains that their work, which began in 2021, is a remaster. "We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it," they stated. "But most of all, we never wanted to change the core. It’s still a game from a previous era and should feel like one."
The studio hopes that Oblivion Remastered will provide a fresh yet familiar experience for all players, whether they are long-time fans returning to Cyrodiil or newcomers stepping out of the Imperial sewer for the first time. "Our hope with this remaster is, that no matter who you are, when you step out of the Imperial sewer – you feel like you’re experiencing it for the first time," Bethesda shared on their social media.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
