The Witcher's upcoming multiplayer game may allow players to create their own Witchers, as evidence from one job posting at a CD Projekt-owned development studio suggests. While it's certainly not uncommon for multiplayer games to include character creation, new information being uncovered suggests The Witcher's multiplayer game will also follow this trend.
Announced in the latter half of 2022 and operating under the working title Project Sirius, the game in development was initially presented as a spin-off of The Witcher with multiplayer elements. It is being developed by The Molasses Flood, a Boston-area-based game studio working under the CD Projekt banner, whose other games include survival crafting adventures The Flame in the Flood and Drake Hollow.
2More recent reports since that time have indicated that the multiplayer Witcher game will be a live-service game, which could take it in a few different directions, functioning as either a game where players select from a roster of pre-determined heroes or allowing them to create a new character in the Witcher franchise's familiar dark fantasy world. Now, a job posting for a lead 3D character artist at The Molasses Flood is lending evidence that it may be the latter of those options. The job description states that the person accepting this position will report to the Project Sirius art director and will work with other members of the creative team to "ensure characters align with the project’s artistic vision and gameplay needs."
While many players are likely excited about the possibility of adding their own Witchers to the fold, they would be wise to keep their expectations in check until CD Projekt reveals more about the game. The new job posting shows that The Molasses Flood is seeking an artist who can deliver "world-class characters," though that doesn't necessarily mean developing a character creation tool to let players do it themselves, and it could just as easily mean developing other characters in The Witcher's world, like selectable heroes and NPCs.
If the upcoming game does allow players to create new Witchers, the news comes at a good time for CD Projekt. The first major trailer for The Witcher 4 was revealed a few weeks ago at The Game Awards, and while the developers have confirmed that Geralt will appear in The Witcher 4, the main character duties are being handed off to Ciri for the next three mainline games. That news has not sat well with some fans of the series for a variety of reasons, and giving them the ability to create their own monster-slaying Witchers could help ease some of the discontent from that portion of the fan community.
