Miami Vice reboot taps Top Gun: Maverick director

by Camila Sep 29,2025

Universal Pictures has reportedly tapped Joseph Kosinski to helm a new Miami Vice film adaptation, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Acclaimed screenwriter Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) has been brought on board to pen the script, developing an initial draft by Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick). Gilroy recently contributed to multiple episodes of the Star Wars spin-off series Andor, created by his brother Tony Gilroy.

The original Miami Vice television series became a cultural phenomenon during its five-season run on NBC from 1984-1989. Created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced by Michael Mann, the groundbreaking police drama starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover Miami detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. The series revolutionized television aesthetics with its distinctive visual style and iconic soundtrack.

A previous film adaptation was released in 2006, directed by Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral) and starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the lead roles.

While specific details remain undisclosed, the new Miami Vice project won't be Kosinski's immediate next directorial effort following the June 2024 release of his Formula 1 racing drama F1. This scheduling should allow the Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy director ample preparation time - including selecting the perfect Ferrari for the iconic Vice aesthetic.
