2024: A Year of Remarkable Comics
In 2024, readers found comfort in familiar narratives, yet this year's offerings transcended expectations, pushing creative boundaries. Navigating the sheer volume of weekly comics from major publishers, alongside graphic novels from diverse sources, is a daunting task. This list highlights some of 2024's standout titles.
A Few Notes Before We Begin:
Table of Contents
Batman: Zdarsky Run
A technically impressive but ultimately underwhelming comic. The fight against the wrong Batman proved tedious, except for the intriguing neuro-arc with the Joker.
Nightwing by Tom Taylor
A strong start, but the series faltered towards the end, accumulating filler issues. While not a complete failure, it fell short of its potential, missing the mark of a truly exceptional title.
Blade + Blade: Red Band
A thrilling action-packed comic perfectly capturing the Daywalker's essence—a bloody, vampire-slaying extravaganza.
Vengeance of the Moon Knight + Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu
A mixed bag. The premature resurrection of Moon Knight undermined many plot points, hindering character development. However, there's hope for future redemption.
Outsiders
A Planetary reimagining seamlessly integrated into the DC Universe. While the meta-commentary is heavy-handed, it remains a solid entry.
Poison Ivy
A surprisingly long-running series (36 issues!), offering a consistent, if sometimes uneven, psychedelic-astrosocial experience.
Batman and Robin by Joshua Williamson
Williamson returns with Damien Wayne facing a new foe: school. While not reaching the heights of the first Robin series, it’s a charming coming-of-age story.
Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver
A surprisingly delightful comic from Dark Horse. Its simplicity and cozy atmosphere are its greatest strengths.
The Flash Series by Simon Spurrier
A complex and challenging read, rewarding those willing to persevere. The unpredictable narrative keeps readers engaged until the very end.
The Immortal Thor by Al Ewing
Despite its flaws, Ewing's involvement keeps the story intriguing, even if the plot itself feels somewhat stagnant. The artwork remains a highlight.
Venom + Venom War
A chaotic and compelling read, leaving a lasting impression.
John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America
A masterpiece in its first part (UK), but the second part (US) falls flat. Despite its inconsistencies, Spurrier's portrayal of Constantine remains brilliant.
Ultimate X-men by Peach Momoko
A unique blend of manga, psychological horror, and X-Men, beautifully illustrated by Peach Momoko.
